David Snell`s Web Pages
Black CatAbout This Site
This page gives some information about navigating this web site.
The site has been extensively updated to make it hopefully more smart phone friendly and also to make a nicer presentation. The narrow text area is easier to read than at full screen width. Scripting is used in a number of places, particularly in the display of the big pictures, see below, so it should not be disabled to get the best from the site. Cookies are used only for purely internal purposes, as for the big pictures. Cookies will not be used to record user information.
The information bar at the very top of a page gives the current date on the left and on the right the date the content of the displayed page was last altered, this date is taken from content file and does not change with a site rebuild.
Below the information bar is the menu section. Each area of interest will have a different picture on the left taken from my collection of photographs around Malvern in Worcestershire and St. Keverne in Cornwall. The menu on the right gives access to each area of interest. Blue text takes you to the area index page, italic normal text indicates that you are reading a sub section of an area and can be selected to get back to the index. Green text for a manu item indicates that you are looking at the index page and cannot be selected. Pale blue (cyan) indicates that the area of interest is currently not ready, it cannot be selected though a blank index page has been prepared.
Below the menu section is a blue title bar with a black cat on the left. The left hand text in this bar gives the title of the page you are looking at. to the right of this may appear a link back to the index page of a sub-area. Note that when viewing a big picture, see below, this link will go back to the index page, not take you back to where you were reading.
Where a printer icon appears to the far right of the blue title area there is a printer friendly version available. By selecting this icon, a new window or tab is created with printer friendly format. The text on these pages will mostly be in black, the menu, links and navigation icons have been removed. Use the browser's toolbar printer icon or file/print menu item to send the page to your printer. You can get back to the main page easily by dismissing the printer friendly window or tab with the X button at top right, or if it comes up in a tab click the X button of the tab. I know the icon is hard to select on a smart phone, but do you really want to print from a phone, well perhaps over WiFi. It is actually possible to select it on my smart phone.
At the bottom centre of each page there will be either the section name or a blue bar with three parts which can be selected to go to the previous article in the series, the next article or back to the index page. On the far left of the bottom area is a link to send an email to me. This will be primed with the name of the section you are looking at in the subject line. Note this will probably bring up your email client. On the far right of the bottom area is a link back to the place where you were reading before coming to the current page.
Where a picture has a drop shadow an Water wheel at The Ponds enlarged version can be seen by clicking on it. To return to where you were click on the large picture or on the 'Back to where you were' text. The file size for bigger pictures is limited to a maximum of about 70 Mbytes, however some of the pictures run into quality problems at this file size so may be as much as 100 Mbytes. A picture with a frame, as in the Walks area, will take you to a subsection of the area you are in.
In some places ancillary information, such as comments and Bible quotes, may be given. These will be enclosed within a narrower area with smaller blue text. Like this comment.

During development the site is viewed using FireFox and also checked with Internet Explorer. Older versions of Internet Explorer may not work well as they do not handle style sheets according to the current specification. On smart phones the Firefox app is used and also the Chrome app.
Other things you may like to know. This site is hand crafted using the Programmers's File Editor produced by Alan Philips of Lancaster University Computer Centre. Also a legacy application WordPro by Lotus Software mainly to get spelling checks. The html code is generated by a powerful text processing application of my own design called DocPrep. Using this I can write almost normal text and it also enables me to use common files for such things as the page heading and tail. Simple changes to a control file cause the slight differences to be incorporated, such as the page description and the picture. Also the printer friendly page can be created from the same text file but with changes made to remove navigation items. Style sheets are used extensively for layout purposes rather than tables which can sometimes give odd results.
