Black CatPorthallow & Porthoustock
How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
Psalm 84:1-2
This walk is mainly over fields, though some of it along a narrow road. Boots will be needed whatever the weather. Length about 5 miles.

Well Lane Leave St. Keverne Square towards Porthallow (Commercial Road) and almost immediately turn right down Well Lane, beside the house surrounded by painted farm implements, this goes past the Parish Hall. At the bottom of the hill cross the stile and turn right down a track toward the sewerage works. To the right of the entrance to this is a stile followed by a footpath beside bushes. Keep to this until it comes out at fields and follow the path with the hedge on your left. This will bring you out on the road to Porthallow. Turn right and in about 50yds find a stile into a field on your left. Over this stile follow the footpath diagonally across two fields. If the path cannot be seen follow the edges of the fields along three sides keeping the hedge on your right to the stiles that take you from field to field.

The path now takes you across another field with the hedge on your left and diagonally across the last of these fields, to converted farm buildings. Follow the made up path leading down onto the road at Tregaminion. Here turn left and then swing right before the farmyard. The path now goes left again and runs between two hedges and over a fallen tree, be careful not to take a similar looking path on your right. Tregaminion - Porthallow Your trail will lead down beneath trees to a stream and then up again between hedges to come out suddenly at a field overlooking a narrow valley. Arc round to your right across the field and go down beneath trees until you reach the road beside the sewerage station. Proceed left to come to the village of Porthallow with its attractive beach. Take time here to look around, there are many interesting cottages, also a post office to buy and send cards. Or perhaps have a break at the Five Pilchards.
The Five Pilchards - Porthallow Leave Porthallow by the coastal path which can be found on the right hand side of the beach, looking out to sea. A stiff climb will bring you out onto the headland which gives a good view over the cove. Follow the path to a field and aim for the far right corner diagonally across. There may be horses here, they seem to be friendly, but always be respectful of horses. Cross a stile and come to a road, turn left here down a steep road to Porthkerris beach where there are old quarry workings and a former MOD testing station.

Cross the beach diagonally to your right. At the far side, near some rocks, you will find an old tramway onto which you can climb and which now takes the footpath up the cliff side with a quarry working on your right. Boats at Porthallow Keep to the main path and don't try to take paths on the left which will only lead to a steep edge. If the tide is high follow the track that climbs up at the top of the beech near to the entrance and at the top turn right. Once at the top you can continue on the path down an old tip into more workings and thence onto a lower path above the sea. This will lead you to Porthoustock where there are a number of disused quarry buildings and a picnic area.
Boats at Porthoustock On leaving Porthoustock facing away from the sea take the road to the right, round a left hand bend and then follow the path which is straight ahead. (The main road swings to the right here.) There are lovely thatched cottages on your right, formerly belonging to fishermen, at the end of this lane a footpath takes you through to Trenoweth Mill. The coastal path turns right up a field just here, but keep straight on over some stepping stones to avoid the muddy stream. Other streams run over the path in several places so you may need good boots to get through the mud. At Trenoweth Mill the path comes onto another road, proceed with the white cottage on your right and at the bottom of the hill find a path which runs between stone hedges. Lane past fishermans’ Cottages - Porthoustock The path divides at a bridge over a stream, keep left here over the stile and skirt along with a wall on your right and the stream on your left. Over another stile and bridge then up the path until you come to a high stile at yet another stream, this takes you into a field from where you can see St. Keverne Church. Follow the path and go over another stile, across a track, and over two stiles, the hedge is first on your left then on your right. Go through the kissing gate into the church yard and thence back to the square.
